What are turned parts?
Turned parts are produced on lathes. The workpiece or a complete bar rotates at several thousand revolutions per minute. Material is removed as the turning tool engages with the workpiece. The result is a rotationally symmetrical contour. Turning is a machining process. Feed rate and speed depend on the material and tool.
MANUFACTURING OF PRECISE TURNED PARTS
Contract manufacturing of CNC turned parts
Do you outsource turned parts orders? Ask us, because CNC turning is a main focus of our daily work alongside CNC milling. We have a wide range of manufacturing technologies at our disposal. This guarantees economical production of everything from simple to complex drawing parts.
In addition to the pure production of turned parts, we also offer other manufacturing processes, in some cases with co-operation partners. For example, surface finishing, labelling or the assembly of components. This enables us to supply you with completely finished components or assemblies.

GENERAL INFORMATIONS
Which steel for turned parts?
There are steel grades that are easy to machine and there are also steel grades that are less easy to machine. The choice of steel grade depends on the specific application. If there are no specific requirements, a free-cutting steel 11SMn30 or with lead 11SMnPb30 is the first choice for a lathe operator. These free-cutting steels have very good machining properties.
What do turned parts cost?
The main cost factor in CNC turning is the material, as well as the costs for the required tools, machines and time. The costs vary depending on the geometry and quantity. To calculate the costs, you need to specify the production quantity and a drawing that precisely defines the turned part.
Tip: Additional costs can also be incurred if the surface specifications are too fine or the tolerances too tight. These points should be taken into account when creating a drawing.
What are precision turned parts?
Precision turned parts are very accurate and precise turned parts. They are mainly produced on CNC lathes. CNC is short for ‘Computerised Numerical Control’. Computerised lathes enable the production of very tight tolerances. Tolerances of less than 0.02mm are possible. The repeat accuracy of CNC machines is a major advantage in the production of precision parts.
Advantages of CNC lathe machining
Machining offers a variety of benefits that make it a popular choice for metalworking.
The advantages:
- Precision: Computer-aided manufacturing enables precise machining with tight tolerances. This is the basis for the high quality of the manufactured parts.
- Repeat accuracy: The CNC control ensures that production steps can be repeated exactly time and time again. This guarantees consistent quality in the series production of parts.
- Flexibility: Different diameters and materials can be machined. This makes CNC machining versatile.
- Complexity: CNC lathes can be used to create complex shapes and contours. This would be difficult to realise with conventional lathes.
- Efficiency: The automatic control ensures efficient and automated production. The high precision also makes it possible to reduce rejects.
- Cost efficiency: CNC lathes can be used universally. This means that a wide range of parts can be produced. High precision and efficiency enable costs to be reduced and profitability to be increased.
TURNED PARTS ACCORDING DRAWING
Why create a technical drawing?
Technical drawings are used to define the required properties of turned parts. The drawing shows the turned part graphically in a two-dimensional plane. The illustration is true to scale. There are presentation rules that must be observed when creating technical drawings. This means that everyone has the same basis and understanding for reading a drawing. Depending on the complexity, several views are possible. It is important to specify all dimensions for the shape and geometry of the workpiece, the surface, material and treatments. This is the only way to guarantee production without time-consuming queries and errors. The German Institute for Standardisation (DIN) is the publisher of the presentation rules. The various standards and rules can be viewed there, for example DIN ISO128, DIN406, DIN EN ISO 5457, DIN ISO 5455 ff.
A standardised basis for the design of drawings is important. This is the basis so that everyone interprets the drawing in the same way and errors are avoided. Ambiguities can be very expensive later in production!
Dimensioning a turned part
Design tips and information on creating a drawing.
The geometry of the part is defined on the drawing by the dimensions. In order to avoid errors, dimensions must result directly or through a combination of dimensions.
What should be dimensioned:
- Diameter
- Lengths / depths
- Radius
- Chamfers / edge breaks
- threads
- Pitch circles
- Surface roughness
- Form-position tolerances
